What kind of effect does Delta 8 THC have?

Before you try a new product, there are always many questions that need to be asked. What is it? What is it made of? And most importantly, how will it affect me? These are all great questions to ask when trying delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta 8 THC or D8) for the first time. After all, if it is anything like the name may suggest, there is probably a thing or two to know about its potential effects. So, let’s talk about what they may be together.

What even is D8 THC?

Of course, before we can really dive into the effects of Delta 8 THC, we need to make sure that you know what it even is and where it comes from. That way, you have a better idea of how it may affect you.

You are likely already familiar with cannabis plants, like hemp and marijuana. These plants have a pretty incredible group of chemical compounds in them called cannabinoids. They are so incredible because they can interact with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in a unique way. This is a group of receptors that are found throughout the human body. Each receptor helps the body regulate certain functions like memory and mood. Because cannabinoids can interact with the ECS, they are able to have an impact on the functions the receptors control.

There is another cannabinoid that Delta 8 THC is very similar to and definitely one that you’ve heard of before. It is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta 9 THC), but it’s normally referred to as just THC. This is because it is the more famous version of tetrahydrocannabinol, so it gets the shorter acronym. D8 and Delta 9 THC are built in almost the exact same way. Check out these two chemical structure depictions. This is for D8, and here is D9! But they have a small difference that makes them distinguishable from each other.

When you’ve heard people talk about Delta 9 THC, it’s probably been in reference to marijuana rather than hemp. But you can find both Delta 9 THC and Delta 8 THC in hemp and marijuana. This is good to know because hemp was federally legalized back in 2018 by the latest version of the Farm Bill. This is a big positive. It means that hemp is legal in most of the United States, even if marijuana is not at the federal level. There are still some states, however, in the US that have made hemp illegal again. So it’s still good to check your local laws on its status. The legalization of hemp also legalized a whole host of cannabinoids; the one exception is Delta 9 THC, a Schedule 1 drug. But Delta 8 THC isn’t classified like that, so it is technically federally legal.

So, now that you have a better idea of what Delta 8 THC is, it’s time to move on to the big question. How will Delta 8 THC affect you?

What are the effects of Delta 8 THC?

Because Delta 8 THC is a cannabinoid, there are many different effects that it may have. These effects can vary widely from person to person. So, if you are new to THC in general, it’s probably best to start with a low amount and see how it makes you feel. If you take it and it has been a little while with no effect, then you can try taking some more, all the while, be carefully not to take too much.

Creates a feeling of euphoria

It should be surprising that something so similar to Delta 9 THC could cause a feeling of euphoria (also known as a high). But it’s true! When Delta 9 THC interacts with the ECS , it binds with the receptors tightly. This makes the psychoactive euphoric feeling. As we talked about a bit above, Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC are structured almost precisely the same. This difference makes it so Delta 8 THC doesn’t bind quite as tightly as Delta 9 THC. It still creates the feeling of euphoria. It’s just different. It’s usually described as being not quite as strong and a bit more bodily than Delta 9 THC.

Could it help with pain and inflammation?

It’s pretty likely that you’ve heard one of the big arguments for medical marijuana; it could be an alternative for opioids and other pain killers. A survey in 2016 in Michigan found a 64% decrease in Opioid users who opted for medical marijuana instead. This study looked at how Delta 8 THC could help with pain and inflammation in mice corneas. The researchers concluded that it was able to help a lot. This other study suggested that D8 THC could help people who are struggling with gastrointestinal inflammation.

There are a lot of different effects that Delta 8 THC may have when you use it. But this is a compound that affects every person who uses it a little bit differently. So, the way that it may affect your friend could be pretty different from the experience that you have with it. This also means that everyone has a different amount of D8 to feel the effects. So, just because one person gets the effects from very little Delta 8 THC, doesn’t mean that it’s the same thing for you. You may need a lot more or a lot less. The only way to really know the kind of effect that Delta 8 THC has in store for you is to give some a try.
