Does D8 THC make you freak out?
The world of hemp has been expanding and changing in recent years. This is due to several reasons, not the least of which is that hemp is finally federally legal. It’s also because we are learning so much more about it and what it can offer us. One aspect that has been really exciting for many people is that hemp has a lot of delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (D8 THC).
There are many people who have tried THC before and have had an unpleasant experience. They may have felt like they were having a bit of a “freak out,” including feeling paranoid and having a major jump in heart rate. This makes these individuals want to stay away from THC in general. After all, if they are both versions of THC, why would D8 THC be any different? Let’s explore that together.
What is D8 THC?
We’ve all heard of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC (or D9 THC, as we will be calling it in this article). However, there is more than one kind of THC out there. As you may have already surmised, D8 THC is a variation of D9 THC. They are very similar; the only difference is that they have slightly different chemical structures. Not different enough to make their effects vastly different, but different enough to make them distinct from each other.
This distinction lies within what kind of interactions they have with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This is a group of receptors that are scattered across the body. These receptors help your body respond to stimuli and control certain functions (like memory and appetite). Cannabinoids, the compounds that are found in cannabis, can interact with this system. THC (all variations) are cannabinoids. They bind with ECS receptors in a way that can cause a feeling of euphoria. D9 THC binds with the receptors tightly. This is what causes the feeling of euphoria. Sometimes, however, that bind and high can cause a feeling of paranoia as well. For example, this studyhad participants try some D9 THC and then surveyed them on how they were feeling. Up to 18.6% of the participants reported feeling like people were plotting against them. D8 THC’s bind appears to be much less tight than D9 THC’s. This means that its effects are more subtle and gentle.
D8 THC is still THC, right?
As you may already know, everyone has their own journey with D9 THC. D8 THC is no different. It affects everyone in its own way. But does that mean that you will “freak out?”
Not necessarily. The main thing to remember about D8 THC is that while it is THC and will likely give you a feeling of euphoria, it is a revised form of THC. It is less likely that it will make you feel paranoid or cause any unpleasantness for you. In fact, the high is often described as being much calmer than D9 THC.
While all of this is very promising, it is, of course, not a guarantee. Sometimes the universe has different plans for us, no matter how much we expect things to go a particular way. So, if you want to try D8 THC and are new to THC or have a history of “freaking out” while using it, then you will want to start smaller. Start with a modest amount and slowly work your way up, allowing time for it to begin its work. If enough time has passed (which is different depending on what kind of product you’re using) and you still aren’t noticing any effect, then you can try taking a little bit more. But if you go too hard too fast, you may not have very much fun.
What else could it do?
Potentially improved cognitive functions
There is a lot to say about the effects of D8 THC. It is less likely to cause a “freak out.” That doesn’t mean that an effect like that isn’t possible, but it is far, far less likely. So, if you’re looking for the euphoric effect or the potential benefits of THC but don’t want to worry about an increased potential of paranoia, D8 THC could be a good option. Plus, it is much more likely to be legal where you live. This is because D8 THC is found in hemp, which is federally legal. It may still be illegal in your state, but it is more likely to be legal than marijuana. But you should still do some research on your local laws to be sure.
